The Oregon State wrestling team resumes its dual-meet season on Sunday when it meets Big Ten powerhouse Michigan in the third annual Joe Wells Classic. The dual is scheduled for 11 a.m. PST at Keen Arena in Ann Arbor.
The dual honors Wells, a former Michigan assistant coach (1979-92) and ex-OSU head coach (1992-2006) who died of cancer on April 16, 2015.
OSU (2-0) placed 31st at the 46-team Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Dec. 1 in its most recent competition. Redshirt senior heavyweight Cody Crawford (11-3) went 4-2 with two pins to lead the Beavers. Redshirt sophomores Kurt Mode (5-4, 149) and Seth McLeod (9-3, 184) each went 2-2.
Michigan (1-1), which is ranked No. 9 in this week’s AWCA Top-25 poll, placed second at the same event. Junior Alex Pantaleo (157) and grad student Adam Coon (heavyweight) won their weight classes; redshirt senior Domenic Abounader (184) placed second.
Six Wolverines placed and they scored team points in nine weight classes. Pantaleo earned co-Big Ten Wrestler of the Week honors.
OSU is not ranked in the NWCA Top 25 poll.
Two Beavers are ranked by InterMat, The Open Mat or the Amateur Wrestling News.
Redshirt junior Cory Griego (7-0, 197) is ranked eighth by the Amateur Wrestling News, 11th by InterMat and 12th by The Open Mat. He did not compete in Las Vegas. He won his weight class at the Navy Classic on Nov. 18.
Redshirt junior Ronnie Bresser (4-0, 125) is ranked ninth by InterMat. He won the 125-pound title at the Mike Clock Open at Pacific University on Nov. 12 while competing unattached. He hasn’t yet wrestled as an attached competitor but is expected to return to the lineup against the Wolverines.
Redshirt senior Jack Hathaway (6-4, 141) went 1-2 at the Cliff Keen event and fell out of the rankings. He was ranked 14th by the Amateur Wrestling News and 16th by The Open Mat the previous week.
Redshirt senior heavyweight Amarveer Dhesi, an All-American after taking fifth at the 2016 NCAA Championships, has not yet competed this season while recovering from a November 2016 knee reconstruction. He missed the 2016-17 season.
OSU’s next home dual is Jan. 14 against Wyoming. It starts Pac-12 action at Arizona State on Jan. 20; OSU will host the Pac-12 Championships on Feb. 25.
