PORTLAND — The Oregon State volleyball team’s outstanding early season play continued Saturday night with a win over Portland. The victory secured the Beavers’ second tournament title in as many weeks after winning their own Beaver State Classic last weekend.
Oregon State improves to 6-0 for the first time since 2014, dealing the Pilots (5-1) their first loss of the season in four sets. Scores were 25-21, 25-23, 23-25, 25-17.
“This is the best team we’ve played so far,” coach Mark Barnard said. “We really didn’t want what happened last year to happen again — winning the first two sets before dropping the match. I think though we wore them down in the fourth set and got up on them and wouldn’t let them back in it.”
Earlier in the day, the Beavers swept Fresno State by scores of 25-15, 25-18, 25-22.
Kylee McLaughlin and Haylie Bennett earned all-tournament honors and Mary-Kate Marshall was named the tourney MVP.
OSU travels to Denton, Texas, next weekend to face host North Texas, Campbell and New Orleans.
