Here's a look at Southern Oregon, which comes to Gill Coliseum for a Monday night game with Oregon State. The game is an exhibition for the Raiders and a counting game for the Beavers.
Southern Oregon is 6-2, coming off tournament wins against California opponents Westmont and Menlo this past weekend in Atherton, California, in the Bay Area.
The Raiders' leading scorer is Philomath High grad Ben DeSaulnier, averaging 18.8 points and 3.4 rebounds. The 6-foot-3 junior guard is shooting .554 from the floor overall and 15 of 37 (.405) on 3-pointers.
Southern, located in Ashland, is also getting contributions from sophomore point guard Tristen Holmes (15.3 points, 4.1 rebounds, 4.5 assists), junior guard Kenny Meyer (10.1 points) and freshman forward Jordan Hunt (9.9 points, 7.6 rebounds).
The Raiders were 24-9 last year and reached the NAIA Division II national tournament. DeSaulnier led the team in scoring at 18.3 points. Southern lost its next three top scorers off that team.
The Raiders are coached by Brian McDermott, in his 21st year as the team's head coach. He entered the season as the 10th-winningest head coach in NAIA and has taken three of his last four teams to the national tournament.
