Earth Day - Albany Events The city of Albany will celebrate Earth Day on Saturday with several events at the Monteith Riverpark shelter. Here is a list of the planned activities:
10 to 11 a.m. - Naturescaping. Learn more about native and organic gardening, landscaping and farming by reducing the use of water and chemicals. There will be a raffle of one free week of organic summer produce.
11 a.m. to noon - Worm composting. Worms transform food scraps and other organic waste into nutrient-rich soil. Learn about "vericulture," and how to start a worm compost bin. There will be a raffle for a free worm bin complete with worms.
Noon to 1 p.m. - Storm drain stenciling. A new program is about to begin to remind everyone that the city's storm drains flow directly into rivers and streams. The stencil next to the drain carries a warning. There will be a raffle of a free car wash for 25 participants courtesy of Carcraft Auto Appearance Center and Four Seasons Car Wash.
1 to 2 p.m. - Riverside cleanup. Volunteers are asked to remove trash and other debris left by the winter storms to ready the park for summer activities. Rubber gloves and garbage bags will be provided. There will be a free 1999 River Rhythms T-shirt for 10 participants.
2 to 3 p.m. - Tree planting. Volunteers will help plant trees in the park to reduce runoff and provide shade. Shovels and trees will be provided. There will be a free native tree sapling for several participants compliments of the Linn Soil and Water Conservation District.
A number of activities are planned for elementary-aged children from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., there will be a tree pruning demonstration by two certified arborists. The pair will climb into a large cottonwood and remove dead and weak branches.
City forester Doug Grafe will give a pruning talk to anyone who is interested.The tree pruning services are being donated by Buena Vista Arbor Care.
